Just read an article in the VC Star, about a study that is just getting underway, in which the National Park Service is looking to expand the boundaries of the Recreational Area. At first blush, I think this is a good idea, especially if it means a possible connection between the Hollywood Hills and the western Santa Monicas.
My only concern is whether it might affect pre-existing geocaches that *might* (and I stress that word) fall under Federal ownership. There is no way for the Fed to force any ownership changes, not can they dictate rules to private or other public agencies. The odds are small that more than a handful of caches could be affected. There is very little reason for us to be worried, and no reason at all to over-react. Woody Smeck, the SMMNRA Superintendent, is not our enemy; despite the current ban on geocaches on MSSNRA land, he and his staff have treated geocaches fairly, IMHO, and have generally been content to let us do our own policing, as far as cache placement is concerned. They know we are here, that we are mindful of the rules and we follow them, and that we try to be helpful (volunteer trail maintenance, trash pick-up, etc.) whenever we can.
Still, it might be prudent if we, the local geocaching community, keep an eye on this, and take part in any public discussions that will take place. I am also hoping that some of our local NPS volunteers might have more details on the NPS proposal. |
