A good friend of mine is a volunteer for the Mountain Bike Unit. You can recogize them by their yellow jerseys and helmets. To be an MBU volunteer, you go through extensive training, including first aid, dealing with the public, and rules/regulations in the open spaces. Since they patrol multiple jurisdictions, they have representatives of three agencies tell them about their land on three different days: NPS, State Parks and I think the last is MRCA. The NPS rep tells them that geocaching is illegal, but fails to mention that only applies to NPS land. Or maybe they say it's illegal everywhere. In any event, my friend thought geocaching was illegal everywhere, not just in NPS land.

The MBU is there to help the public, and report issues to the land managers, not to enforce the law. Maybe that's why they didn't want to talk about it.
