John,
Is your etrex the same one you've had since 2002? I could be wrong, but it could be that your unit reach the end of its satellite look up table. Without the table, your GPS doesn't have a clue where the satellites might be in the sky when it starts trying to acquire signals. Consequently, it's like the first time the unit was ever turned on each time you turn it on. I don't know if I'm right but it's a thought. You could go to Garmin's website and see if they have a rom update for your unit.
