Eco-Clean Up II

by Scott Legal

The Eco-Clean Up group at the trailhead
If you’ve ever wanted to do something for others and for the environment, but didn’t quite know what to do or where to begin, well geocaching can help you out of your dilemma. TRUROKR hosted the second annual eco-cleanup event, Eco-cleanup 2, on January 24, 2004. The event took place on a hill in northwest Newbury Park. The turnout was large and the place got a good makeover. In the end a pickup truck bed was filled to overflowing with bags of cans, bottles, trash and wrecked car parts. There were even parts of an old port-a-potty scattered about that were hauled off to the dump.

As geocachers, many of us head off into the hills looking for caches, only to find an area that has been blighted by thoughtless people that have a disregard for the area by leaving their trash scattered about. Many of us bring trash bags with us on hikes and pick up these discards while we’re out caching. Unfortunately, some areas are too big a job for a few cachers to cleanup. TRUROKR has been a champion of cleaning up other peoples trash for a long time on our local trails and brought the best of two causes together, cleaning up and geocaching. So you get to log a find and do the area a lot of good. There were also three caches on the hill for many to find. Additionally, Gordon the Agourcharger set up special caches just for the event.

Trurokr at the Eco-Clean Up
The day started off gray with a good chance of rain. The rain never materialized and the day became sunny and warm. The event had a much larger draw than the original Eco-Cleanup and was attended by, aerospacecase, agouracharger, Baby Sparkle, Borgt, campyc, ecochic, EMC of Northridge, CA, Faveral, fireball1, Gamekeeper, Jongleur, Letmethink, Mountain Cat, n6mqm, narlsharls, Pain and Panic, slegal, stampsalot87, Team Dakiba, thatmakesmehppy, The Grim Cachers, TRUROKR, upsguy, willithin and WM6P.

As has been proven at the many Conejo Cachers pizza events, geocachers know how to eat pizza and drink beer. After the clean up event was complete, most of us headed to Lamppost Pizza to partake in the spoils of a job well done.
